Auckland planning rules are intended to create a high-quality and more compact built environment that complements the unique and natural qualities of the city.
In 2016, the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan was made operative in part and replaced the former Regional Policy Statement and 12 district and regional plans. The new plan represents a significant change in the rules that govern how Auckland Council controls the use of land and resources. It also affects what applicants need to consider when seeking resource consent for MDH projects.
The Auckland Unitary Plan allows more MDH to be built as of right in many parts of the inner suburbs, including:
- H4 Residential – Mixed Housing Suburban Zone
- H5 Residential – Mixed Housing Urban Zone
- H6 Residential – Terraced Housing and Apartment Buildings Zone
