Many medium-density housing developments (especially apartment complexes and mixed-use office/residential, retail/residential buildings) fall into the category of mid-rise buildings.

Over the last two or three decades, a number of specific issues have emerged in the construction of medium-density housing and mid-rise buildings. These issues include lack of movement control in concrete masonry, inadequate cover for reinforcing steel, steel corrosion and weathertightness defects.

Many elements within a medium-density housing development need to be restrained, particularly when the building is subject to seismic loads.
